Students and educators need to know about ADHD because ADHD is not one of the disability categories specified in IDEA. Therefore, the federal government does not publish information regarding locations of where these students are educated. Students and educators have to be able to recognize that students with ADHD have pervasive patterns of inattention, impulsitivity, and/or hyperactivity-impulsitivity more frequent and/or severe than other individuals at the same level of development. It is estimated that 3 to 5 percent of the population has ADHD. Due to the emphasis on inclusive practices for students with learning and emotional disabilities, it is safe to assume that the majority of students with ADHD are educated in a general classroom setting.
