
Brain Structure
Brain structure and functioning are suspected as playing a role in the cause of ADHD. Children with ADHD have 3 to 4 percent smaller frontal lobes than children without ADHD. The frontal lobes are located in the front of the brain and are responsible for problem solving, planning, understanding cause and effect, and controlling impulses. This part of the brain also uses less glucose, the main source of brain energy.
Dopamine hypothesis is the leading theory of ADHD. Dopamine increases motivation and alertness. This is also seen with the use of stimulants. Medical doctors prescribe stimulants to patients with ADHD as a way of increasing dopamine in the brain.
Genetics
No gene has been found to determine if a gene is responsible for ADHD. Half of parents with ADHD have children with ADHD. Twins have 50 to 80 percent chance of having ADHD if their twin has ADHD.
Poor Parenting and family Environment
Poor parenting and chaotic home environments do not cause ADHD, but can problematic effects on children with ADHD.
Watching Television
There is a correlation between high amounts of watching television and attention disorders, but ADHD is not caused by this.
Food and Sugar Allergies
Eating nutritious foods an exercise has a positive effect on all parts of human behavior, but not study has food diet to be a cause of ADHD.
